DJ CFTC AGRICULTURE: Managed Funds Add Long Bets On CBOT Soybeans

CHICAGO (Dow Jones)--Money managers increased their net long position in Chicago Board of Trade soybean futures, government data showed Friday, as expectations continued that U.S. and world soybean supplies will tighten this year.
Large managed funds, including hedge funds, were net long 242,673 CBOT soybean contracts in the week ended April 10, up 3% from the prior week, according to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Short positions stood at 7,440 contracts.
The net position is the difference between the number of long contracts, or bets prices will rise, and short contracts, or bets prices will fall.
Investors placed more bets that soybean prices will rise due to diminished yields for a South American crop hit by drought, and concerns that soy plantings in the U.S. this year may not be high enough to meet growing demand, including for exports to China.
Money managers trimmed their net long position in CBOT corn contracts 4% from the previous week, to 193,832 contracts, according to the CFTC.
Money managers expanded their net short positions in wheat.
In wheat, money managers were net short 42,464 CBOT contracts, up 33% from the prior week.
Money managers cut their net long position in live cattle to 50,254 contracts, down 18% from the prior week.
In lean hog futures, money managers decreased their net long position to 2,815 contracts, a 53% drop from the prior week.
