DJ CFTC AGRICULTURE: Managed Funds Add Long Bets On CBOT Soybeans

CHICAGO (Dow Jones)--Money managers increased their net long position in Chicago Board of Trade soybean futures, government data showed Friday, as traders continued to account for concerns that U.S. and world soybean supplies will tighten this year.
Large managed funds, including hedge funds, were net long 235,387 CBOT soybean contracts in the week ended April 3, up 12% from the prior week, according to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Short positions stood at just 5,152 contracts.
The net position is the difference between the number of long contracts, or bets prices will rise, and short contracts, or bets prices will fall.
Investors made more bets on soybean prices rising due to an expected smaller South American crop, and concerns that U.S. farmers this year may not plant enough soybeans to meet strong demand. Making traders more optimistic about soy prices was a U.S. Department of Agriculture report on March 30 that forecast lower-than-expected U.S. soy plantings this year.
Money managers were net long 202,802 CBOT corn contracts in the week ended April 3, down 10% from the prior week, according to the CFTC.
Money managers added slightly to their net short positions in wheat.
In wheat, money managers were net short 32,017 CBOT contracts, up from 31,392 the prior week.
Money managers cut their net long position in live cattle to 61,341 contracts, down 21% from the prior week.
In lean hog futures, money managers decreased their net long position to 5,984 contracts, a 67% drop from the prior week.
