MUMBAI (Dow Jones)--India's edible oil prices continued to rise for the
second consecutive week driven by concerns over the summer-sown oilseed output
following weak monsoons.
India's Meteorological Department has estimated that rainfall during the
June-September monsoon season this year will be around 13% below the long-term
average, severely reducing plantings and damaging the standing crop in many
parts of the country. Rainfall was 29% below average as of Aug. 11.
The area under oilseeds from June 1 to Aug. 12 fell to 15.25 million hectares
from 16.42 million hectares during the year-ago period.
"If the rains continue to remain elusive, then the impact on the planted
oilseed crops could be very severe," said a trader based in the central Indian
state of Madhya Pradesh.
The fear of a low crop coupled with good demand for edible oil ahead of
festivals this month are also keeping domestic prices firm, he said.
With a quarter of India's 626 administrative districts declaring a drought
this year, prices of staple foods have risen by an average 30% and as much as
40% in some cases.
Besides, poor monsoons, mostly firm overseas oilseed markets also lent
positive momentum to local prices.
Refined, bleached and deodorized palm olein prices rose to INR40,800/ton from
INR38,800/ton last week, while refined soyoil increased to INR46,500/ton from
INR45,200/ton.
Crude palm oil rose to INR36,200/ton compared with INR34,200/ton last week.
