CAIRO (Dow Jones)- Prices of rice dropped in the local market to 1.75 Egyptian pounds ($0.31) a kilo after the ministry of trade issued a decree to double the export duty on rice, Egyptian daily Al-Alam Al-Youm reports. The prices of rice ranged between EGP 2.00 and EGP 2.25 before the decree, the paper reports. Egyptian Minister of Trade Rachid Mohamed Rachid issued a decree Monday calling for export duty on rice to increase from EGP1000 to EGP2000 a ton. Rice traders expect prices to further drop with the beginning of the rice season in September, the paper reports.
