MANILA (Dow Jones)--A recent increase in the Philippine government's support price for corn has been exerting pressure on local demand for feed and could result in a substantial decline in production, a feed milling industry executive said Thursday. Prior to the price support hike, weak feed demand was already limiting corn purchases by feed millers, said the executive, who is not authorized to speak to the media and therefore requested anonymity. Other industry officials declined to comment on the issue. With the increase in support price for corn, demand for feed is expected to slowdown further, the executive said. In fact, local corn is currently offered at PHP11.50 per kilogram at the farmgate level, compared with a government support price of PHP13/kg. "The support price increase hasn't helped anybody, even the local farmers. How can they increase their selling price when there's no (significant) demand?" the executive said. The local feed milling industry is also under pressure from weak demand for meat products amid the global economic downturn, the executive said, adding that production this year could decline substantially from 2008. Last year, feed output totaled 6.5 million metric tons from 7.3 million tons in 2007. In May, the government approved an increase in the support price for yellow corn to PHP13/kg from PHP11.50/kg in order to boost output. Corn is a major component in livestock and poultry feed.
