SAO PAULO (Dow Jones)--National Commodities Supply Corp, or Conab, Monday
pegged Brazil's 2008-09 crop at 57.1 million metric tons of soybeans.
Coanab's ninth crop estimate is 4.8% below the 2007-08 crop of 60 million
tons.
The estimate is also slightly below Conab's previous estimate in May that put
the soy crop at 57.6 million tons for 2008-09.
Conab's new crop estimate is in line with private estimates of between 57-58
million tons.
Planted area is seen at 21.7 million hectares in 2008-09 compared to 21.3
million hectares in the 2007-08 season, Conab said.
The harvesting has finished in Brazil's main soy areas. Mato Grosso state,
Brazil's No.1 soy producer, produced 17.9 million tons of soy in 2008-09, while
Parana, the No.2 soy producer, harvested 9.5 million tons.
Brazil overall is expected to produce 134.2 million tons of grains in 2008-09
including soy, corn and wheat. This compares to 144 million tons in 2007-08,
according to Conab.
Brazil is the world's No. 2 soy producer behind the U.S.
