1309 EDT [Dow Jones]-Improving export demand helped to firm cash basis bids for most classes of grain at the US Gulf Thursday, highlighted by a 10 cent per bushel rise in spot soft red winter wheat premiums, offered by some New Orleans area merchandisers. An export report issued by USDA early Thursday said marketings of wheat to other nations rose 24% last week, while corn and soybean sales doubled and tripled respectively, from very low levels recorded last week. Additional basis-support stemmed from flooding and periodic lock closures on the interior rivers system, which have slowed barge traffic significantly, this spring. US grain futures were modestly mixed Thursday, with cash contracts for most commodities - except corn - generally wavering by less than 3 cents. "Corn futures are trading [5 cents] higher at midday," said Doane Agricultural Services. "Strength in crude oil and the stock market, along with a bullish weekly export sales report, are supportive factors." (GLW) Contact us in Chicago at 312-750-4075; gary.wulf@dowjones.com
