MUMBAI (Dow Jones)--India's edible oil prices fell in the week to Friday on a
rise monsoon rains in key oilseeds growing areas and fears of imposition of
stock limits on soybean.
India's annual monsoon rains were 4% above normal in the week ended Sept. 2,
an rise from the previous week, when the rainfall was 5% below normal, the
Meteorological Department said Thursday.
"The improvement in rains has raised the hopes of better soybean output,
which is depressing the prices," said a trader based in Indore, a large trading
hub in central state of Madhya Pradesh.
Madhya Pradesh is the country's largest soybean producer.
Lackluster demand for oilmeals also pulled down the prices, said the trader.
India's oilmeal exports in August fell 50% on year to 214,807 metric tons due
to weak demand and lower crushing, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India
said Friday.
Soymeal exports in August fell sharply to 127,299 tons from 205,890 tons,
while rapeseed meal exports declined to 61,668 tons from 149,999 tons.
Talks of imposition of stock limit on soybean also added bearish trend to the
market.
Refined, bleached and deodorized palm olein prices fell to 38,500 rupees
($787.56) a ton from INR39,700/ton last week, while refined soyoil was at
INR43,500/ton, down from INR45,100/ton a week-ago.
Crude palm oil fell to INR33,500/ton compared with INR35,300/ton last week.
