(Adds details and more comments from agriculture minister.) NEW DELHI (Dow Jones)--India's federal government Friday lowered the minimum export price for basmati rice to $800 a metric ton from $1,100/ton earlier, the country's agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said at a news conference Friday. Industry officials had sought a cut in the floor price as it was blocking the exports of cheaper varieties of the aromatic, long-grain rice. The federal government had in 2007 fixed a floor price of $1,200/ton, as part of a move to discourage shipments to ensure ample local supplies of all grains to rein in inflation. It was lowered to $1,100/ton in January this year on ample stocks. India, one of the world's largest basmati exporter, exported 1.5 million tons of the premium grain in the financial year that ended March. The farm minister also said that the government will sell 3 million tons of subsidized sugar in the local market, which should help cool local prices. Sugar prices have risen by 30% in the local markets as the domestic output is estimated to fall to about 15 million tons in the marketing year ending September from 26.3 million tons a year ago.
